Banff Sunshine Village is unusual before you even click into your bindings. The skiing isn't at the parking lot. It sits in an alpine bowl high above, reached by a long gondola ride, and it spreads across three separate mountains that all drain toward one central village. With about 3,358 acres, 137 named runs and 12 lifts inside Banff National Park, this is a resort where a bit of trail map study pays off. This guide explains how the zones fit together, which lifts link them, and where first-time visitors usually get turned around.
Why Banff Sunshine Village Is Hard to Navigate
Most resorts put the village at the bottom and the terrain above it. Sunshine flips that. The base area is basically a parking lot and gondola terminal at about 1,660 m (5,446 ft). The eight-person gondola runs up to a mid-station at Goat's Eye Mountain and then on to the upper Village. According to Wikipedia's Banff Sunshine entry, the ride takes roughly 10 minutes to Goat's Eye and 18 minutes to the Village. So you have to make a routing decision before you've made a single turn.
The second complication is that the Village sits between the three peaks, not below them. Some lifts start right in the Village. Others, like Wawa, Jackrabbit and the Goat's Eye lifts, start below it. Ski down to them and you'll need a lift or two to climb back up. Add in high, open alpine terrain with few trees for reference, flat stretches that snowboarders often complain about, and a ridge that crosses the Continental Divide into British Columbia, and it's easy to end up somewhere you didn't plan to be.
Understanding the Banff Sunshine Village Trail Map
The official Banff Sunshine trail maps split the resort into three connected mountains around the central village. Learn which lifts belong to which mountain and the map gets much easier to read.
- Goat's Eye Mountain: This is the first gondola stop. It's served by Goat's Eye Express, which the resort calls its most challenging lift, plus Wolverine Express and the Jackrabbit quad. Wolverine also links over to Teepee Town LX, and you reach Jackrabbit from Wolverine. Goat's Eye terrain suits advanced beginners and up. True first-timers should stay in the upper Village zones.
- Lookout Mountain: Lookout rises above the Village and is home to Teepee Town LX, Super Angel LX and the Great Divide Express. Great Divide tops out around 8,900 ft and passes from Alberta into BC and back again. This is the highest and most alpine part of the resort. The gated entrance to Delirium Dive is at the top of the Divide.
- Mount Standish: Standish is served by Standish Express, Wawa and Strawberry Express. Strawberry is the main beginner lift, with short greens and gentle blues right next to the Village. Wawa is the odd one out because it sits downhill of the main Village buildings.
The long run back to the parking lot also matters. The Ski Out, known as Banff Avenue on the map, starts in the upper Village and winds about 5 km down beneath the gondola to the base area.
Navigation Tips for Skiers
- Decide where to get off the gondola. SkiBig3 suggests riding through to the upper Village to start your day. Some reviewers say you'll find shorter lines by getting off at the Goat's Eye mid-station and heading up high later. Both approaches work. Just pick one before you reach the mid-station.
- Know the route from the Village to Goat's Eye. Take a short ride up Jackrabbit, then head left toward Wolverine and the bottom of Goat's Eye Express.
- Plan the climb back from Wawa. After lapping Wawa, the usual way back is down to Jackrabbit, then across to Teepee Town LX, then the green run back to the Village. Leave time for it.
- Use Miss Gratz as your link. This short green run takes you from the Wolverine and Jackrabbit area to Teepee Town LX, which is your ride back toward Lookout and the Village.
- Keep your speed on flat sections. Banff Avenue gets flat before Jackrabbit, and the resort has other flat spots too. Snowboarders especially should carry speed.
- Respect the Delirium Dive gate. You need an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe, plus a partner with the same gear, to go through. If you aren't equipped, don't plan a route that relies on it.
- Download if the Ski Out isn't for you. Beginners who don't want the long, flat Banff Avenue can ride the gondola down instead.
Having the map on your phone helps a lot in flat light above the trees. The MountainMap app can show you which side of a ridge you're on before you commit to a run.
Planning Your Routes
Because everything centres on the Village, the easiest way to plan is in loops that start and end there.
- Beginner day: Do laps on Strawberry Express and use the Strawberry learning terrain near the Village. Once you're comfortable, try the greens off Wolverine and Jackrabbit, such as Larch Glade, then ride Teepee Town LX back up. Download the gondola at the end of the day.
- Intermediate tour: Warm up on Standish Express, then move to Super Angel LX and the Great Divide Express for the high bowls along the Divide. After lunch, drop to Goat's Eye by way of Jackrabbit and Wolverine. Finish with the Ski Out to the parking lot.
- Advanced day: Get off at the mid-station and do laps on Goat's Eye Express while the snow is fresh. Ride Wolverine and Teepee Town LX back toward Lookout, then go up the Great Divide in the afternoon. Hit Delirium Dive only if you have the required gear and a partner.
- Park riders: Strawberry Park is reached from the Strawberry chair in the Village. Great Divide Park is off the Angel or Divide lifts, SpringHill Park is off Angel, and the Kids Play Park is served by Wolverine or Jackrabbit.
If your trip also includes the other big Banff-area resort, our Lake Louise ski resort trail map guide breaks down that mountain's layout the same way. For a big-vertical comparison elsewhere in western Canada, see our Revelstoke Mountain Resort trail map guide.
Final Thoughts
Sunshine gets much simpler once you think of it as a hub with three spokes. The Village is the hub, and Goat's Eye, Lookout and Standish are the spokes. Get your gondola stop right, remember that Wawa and the Goat's Eye lifts sit below the Village, and know that Jackrabbit, Wolverine and Teepee Town LX are the lifts that get you around. Do that and you can cover all three mountains in a day without getting stuck on the wrong side of the bowl.
