Canyon BoardingPass™

A Technology-Based Traffic Solution

This application is currently in a beta phase and you may encounter bugs while we work to fix them. Thank you for your patience.

Canyon BoardingPass™ is a conceptual technology solution for traffic control in the Cottonwood Canyons that was modelled after Southwest Airlines Boarding Pass for onboarding of an Airplane efficiently. It leverages Geographic Information System (GIS), Mobile Phones and GPS to provide real-time updates for parking demand and parking availability.

Reservation System Use Case

We know reservations work to control and reduce traffic. Arches National Park piloted a reservation system in 2022 and discontinued its use at the beginning of October 2022 and the park was overwhelmed with visitors again, which prompted closures. The same logic can be applied to the Cottonwood Canyons

Key Benefits

  1. “Check-in” process allows administrators (UDOT & Ski Resorts) to measure demand on any given day.
  2. On-boarding via app/text messaging which can be grouped to prevent traffic build-up at the mouth of the canyon when it’s closed. Users will be notified when their boarding group is ready to start going up the canyon.
  3. Users earn “Boarding Points” for loading their car up with passengers. This will incentivize them to carpool. These points can then be converted to goods and services for local companies who would like to advertise their product/service on the app.
  4. Scalable. This solution can be used in any canyon along the Wasatch Front. It’s not limited to a solution for just Little Cottonwood Canyon.
  5. Can be implemented at a lower cost to taxpayers.
  6. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used to count cars and provide real-time updates for parking availability.
  7. The BoardingPass™ technology allows for any Ski Resort or organization to have their own branded app for their own marketing purposes. An app for Snowbird, Alta, Brighton, Solitude have already been created and we can modify the existing apps to meet their specific needs.

How it Works

  1. Make Reservation

Select a Resort/Destination and date you plan to arrive.

  2. Check-In

On the day of arrival you will be notified of your boarding time and assigned parking lot.

  3. Park Car

This will let you know where your car is and gives you a 'breadcrumb' to follow to get back to your vehicle.
